Obituary For William H. Cureton

William H. Cureton went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. He was 82 years old.

William was born and raised in Monroe, North Carolina. He graduated from Winchester High School. After graduation, he relocated to Newburgh, NY, where he met and married Margie M. Powell in 1965. They were married for 55 years. William worked and retired from IBM after 30 years of service.

William was known by many names: Mr. C, Haz, and Bill. His hobbies included meticulously caring for his lawn and going to the track to race his car. In his younger years, you could find him playing basketball across the street from his house, where he played with the neighborhood kids and anyone who traveled from the City of Newburgh to play. He made a positive impact on all who encountered him in life and on the basketball court.

He leaves to cherish his memories his two daughters, Pamela and Michelle Cureton of Newburgh, NY, his sister-in-law, Lolita (Neat) Powell of Newburgh, NY, brother-in-law, Gaythaniel Powell of Newburgh, NY, his nephew Louis Tumblin Jr. (Wendy) of Elyria, OH, niece Barbara Tumblin of Elyria, OH, special daughter, Linda Henderson of Newburgh, NY, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Special thanks to Anthony Scialo, John Cimorelli, and Maureen Pena for their many years of friendship. We would also like to thank his racing, swap meet, and car show friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, Florence Cureton Garris and Arthur Cureton, his stepfather Lonnie Garris, his sisters Cloa Lee Tumblin and Bernice Davis, and his nephews Dale Cureton and Larry Tumblin.

Special thanks to India Turner, Michael Tshribi, and Hospice of Orange and Sullivan County. We will be forever grateful for your care and compassion.

A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

My sincere condolences for loss of your loved one. I am from Monroe, NC. Hazel was an exceptional good athlete, catcher on baseball team, played basketball. He was considered one, if not the best quarterback at Winchester Avenue High School, Monroe, NC. 1961-62 season, he led the team to the conference championship. We affectionately, called him "Lil General, because of how he ran that team.

Daddy Cureton was an extraordinary man whose kindness left a mark on everyone around him. He had a friendly , welcoming spirit that made people feel safe and cared for, and he carried himself with a quiet strength that earned the respect of the whole neighborhood. When the kids wanted to play basketball, he was always there-watchful, protective and proud- making sure they had a safe place to laugh compete and grow. His presence brought comfort, his generosity brought people together and his legacy lives on in the memories of those he looked out for Love Linda Henderson

I would like to offer my condolences to Pamela, Michelle and the Cureton family on the sad news of MR. C passing. I met MR. C in the 80's on the basketball courts across the street from his house. Mr. C presence on the basketball court and in the neighborhood had an impact, respect and love on many of the teenagers growing up. He was a father figure to us and kept us in check. If you didn't see him on the courts or taking care of family business, you can bet you'd find him on his riding lawnmower cutting the grass. Love you MR. C and will Miss You!
