Robert H. Terry Sr. (Bob), entered into eternal rest Thursday, June 20, 2024, in Poughkeepsie, NY. He was 84 years old.
Robert was born January 17, 1939, to Ida Terry in Clover, VA. He attended
schools at Clover Elementary #2 and Mary Bethune High School; both black
segregated schools. Robert served in the U.S. Army from 1957-1960. He lived
in Newburgh/New Windsor most of his life and called it home. He was well-known and loved in the community and cherished and loved by everyone.
Robert was a long-time employee at the State of Newburgh in Newburgh, NY becoming Manager. Once they closed and Atlas Dinette bought the building, he became manager and part owner until they closed down in 1994. After that, he drove school buses for George M. Carroll until 2014 when he retired.
Robert loved watching the New York Mets and would occasionally take the family down to Shea Stadium in Queens to see the games. He also was a big fan of the New York Jets and the New York Knicks.
In his spare time, he liked going to the Casinos, sitting at the Newburgh Waterfront taking in the beauty of nature.
As a kid, every summer when he got his 2-week vacation, he would take the family down to Virginia the first week to visit his mother and family and the
second week he would take the family to Lake George.
Robert leaves to cherish his memories; his children, Regina M. Terry and Derek L. Terry both of Poughkeepsie, NY, Brian R. DeWitt of Sebastopol, CA, and Harold Rayford (Hillary) of Newburgh, NY; his loving grandchildren, Fay and Juquese (Taz) Terry of Newburgh, NY, Kayla Terry of Beacon, NY, Robert H. Terry III of Charlotte, NC, and LaKeisha Rayford of Hyde Park, NY, as well as a host of other loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by his significant other Karen Lazaroff of New Windsor, NY.
He was predeceased by his mother Ida Terry, and his loving wife Virginia J. Terry of almost 40 years, 2 sons, Robert H. Terry Jr. and Dwayne Rayford.; brothers, Louis, Benjamin, Chester, Warren, John David, and Bradley; sisters, Doris Coleman and Joan Hackett.
