Obituary For Mary McCarthy

Mary Margaret Gorman McCarthy
October 6, 1938 — April 21, 2026
Poughkeepsie, NY

MCCARTHY, Mary, a longtime resident of Maynard, MA, died at The Landing Assisted Living and Memory Care in Poughkeepsie, NY, on April 21. She was 87 years old. The beloved wife of the late Bonnie Winokar, Mary is survived by her children Patricia McCarthy (David Boundy), Michael McCarthy (Daphne Minner), and Brian McCarthy (Tessa Kale); her grandchildren Isabelle Boundy (Kevin Staples), Sarah Elizabeth Boundy, and Madeline Boundy; her brother Paul Gorman (Sue) and sister-in-law Kathleen Gorman (James, deceased); her nephew Marshall Stevenson (Eden Morris and Nina Stevenson), and many other nieces and nephews.

Mary was the fourth of five children born to Charles and Eleanore (Quinn) Gorman of Medford, MA. She was a graduate of Regis College and worked for many years as a clinical chemist at Emerson Hospital in Concord, MA. With her late husband Leonard McCarthy, Mary raised three children in Reading, MA. Later, Mary married Bonnie Winokar, of Chelsea, MA. Together, they lived in Maynard from 1988 until Bonnie’s passing in July 2025. Their shared love of travel took them to St. Petersburg, Russia, and numerous other European cities; Costa Rica; Alaska; Hawaii; and Berkshire County, where they regularly attended Tanglewood and Jacob’s Pillow. An avid and prize-winning photographer, Mary chronicled the couple's travels and made studies of the flowers in her gardens.

In retirement, Mary and Bonnie were active in state politics and leaders in the fight for marriage equality in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and throughout the United States. Their 2004 wedding was the subject of the Showtime documentary "Same Sex America." Their deep love and fierce devotion to each other were felt by all who knew them. As per their wishes, there will be a private family memorial in the Berkshires. Instead of flowers, gifts in Mary's memory may be made to the Library of America (www.loa.org/support).
