Karen Sue Johnson (Poochie), also known to many as KJ, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2025, after battling a long illness. KJ touched many souls through her kindness, happiness, and loving demeanor. Her giving soul radiated to everyone she encountered, whether it was lending a helping hand in her community, offering friendship, or simply being herself. Anyone who was in need, she was there to help.
Through her membership with The Firemen’s Exempt, she was there on the front line serving the community, young and old, with volunteering in feeding the needy, assisting in summer programs for the local children, back-to-school events, donating to many programs where she felt she could make a difference, and so much more. Anyone who knew her and encountered her felt her kind spirit. Through that infectious laugh, whether you were happy or sad, she would lift you.
When she wasn’t working, she enjoyed taking long walks and spending time with her family. In her teenage years, she gave her life to Christ and became a member of Central Baptist Church. She retired from Anderson School of Autism in 2023 after 46 years of hardworking, dedicated service.
Her legacy will be left behind in those she loved. She is survived by her sons, Lashon Johnson (Poughkeepsie, NY) and Glen Berry Jr. (Brooklyn, NY); granddaughters Skye Johnson (Newburgh, NY), Snaja Johnson (Poughkeepsie, NY), and Layla Johnson (Albany, NY), and great-grandson, Peyton Morman (Newburgh, NY).
Also, to continue her legacy are her brothers: Herbert Johnson Jr. (Poughkeepsie, NY), Clarence Johnson (Poughkeepsie, NY), and Lee Johnson (Pleasant Valley, NY). Her sisters: Regina Johnson (Poughkeepsie, NY), Brenda Johnson (Poughkeepsie, NY), and Michelle Johnson (Atlanta, GA). She has many nieces and nephews to carry on her giving spirit.
She was predeceased by her parents, Herbert Johnson Sr. and Mary E. Johnson, and brother Kevin Johnson.
Ms. Johnson will have a Gathering 11:00 am – 12:00 Noon, Friday, July 25, 2025, Central Baptist Church, 26 Church Road., Salt Point, NY. Service at Noon at the Church.
