Joseph Chambers was born to the parents Albert Alexander Chambers and Edith Chambers of
Michan District, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, West Indies. In 1970, Joseph migrated to Bell Glade, Florida as a farm worker before relocating to Poughkeepsie, NY in 1990 where he resided until
his death.
After a long illness, Joseph transitioned from this world after a life richly lived in graciousness and kindness. Joseph walked through life with a gentle strength, touching the lives of everyone he encountered with unforgettable politeness.
In 2000, Joseph married Gertrude Bennett resulting in a blended family of four daughters and four sons.
In 2008, Joseph retired from Wassaic Developmental Center after 15 years of service. During
retirement, Joseph enjoyed playing dominoes and cards, traveling, dancing, playing music and
being a chauffeur for his family and friends.
Joseph was pre-deceased by his parents, his wife Gertude, his sister Ivy, and his brothers Eugene and Botherson. He is survived by his sisters Florence and Lydia, his daughters Yvonne, Millicent, Marjorie, and Lamata, and sons Desmond, Omar, Trevor, and Anthony, as well as 16 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Joseph’s unforgettable smile, fun, lovingness, quiet strength, and longevity of 93 years will live
on in our hearts and memories.
