Edith “Pup” Mae Herring, age 90, of New Windsor, NY, peacefully entered into rest on Monday, September 1, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born to Samel “Sam” Shipman and Mollie Baldwin on March 7, 1935, in Whiteville, NC, her life was a true testament to courage, strength, and grace. She was a beloved wife, mother, friend, entrepreneur, and mentor to many. Her listening ear, wisdom, and sound advice made her a trusted confidante.
Edith navigated life with unwavering determination, teaching her children the importance of education, hard work, integrity, and faith. She labored relentlessly to provide for her family, mastering varied skill sets while working at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Veterans Administration Hospital, International Business Machines, and West Point Tours.
Edith was known for her intellect, tenacity, resilience, loyalty, faithfulness, compassion, and wit. When presented with a challenge, you would often hear her say, “Not a problem.” She enjoyed preparing home-style Southern meals for her family and friends. She also took pleasure in playing slot machines with her devoted soulmate, her husband.
Edith is survived by her beloved husband of sixty-three years, David Herring, Jr.; daughters, Sandra Moore, Sharon McDonald, Judith “Judy” Herring, and Carmela (Randolph “Randy”) Herring; son, David Allan Herring; siblings, Anthony “Tony” Shipman and Grace Lewis-Aldrich; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Edith is predeceased by her father, Samel “Sam” Shipman; mother, Mollie Baldwin; and son, Robert “Gilbert” McDonald.
To commemorate Edith’s remarkable life and the memories we cherish, a memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at King of Kings Lutheran Church, 543 Union Avenue, New Windsor, NY 12553. Family and friends will gather at 10 a.m. at the church, and the service will commence at 11 a.m.
Flowers and memorial gifts may be sent to the church.
