Geraldine Herring

July 9 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Geraldine Herring of Newburgh, New York, entered into eternal rest on July 2, 2025, at the age of 93. Born on June 14, 1932, in Clinton, North Carolina, Geraldine was the beloved daughter of the late Isham and Lula Herring. After her mother’s passing, she was raised with care and devotion by her father and stepmother, the late Eula Mae Herring. At age 7, the family migrated to Morehead City, North Carolina, where Geraldine attended public schools in Carteret County. In 1953, she permanently relocated to the NY area (Milton, Marlboro, Newburgh).

Affectionately known as “Geri,” she built a meaningful career and retired after 20 years with IBM in East Fishkill, NY. Never one to slow down, she went on to serve as a substitute teacher in the Newburgh Enlarged School District – a reflection of her tireless spirit and deep love for learning. Later in life, she even pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Theology from the Savona V. Roberts Christian Education Academy in Dutchess County, New York, and a degree from SUNY New Paltz.

A devoted member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church since 1956, Geri lived her faith actively and wholeheartedly. Her contributions to the church community included:
• President of the Ladies’ Ushers
• President of the Echo Chorale Ensemble
• Sunday School Teacher
• Baptist Youth Fellowship Supervisor
• Secretary to Pastor George Smith
• Organizer of many church and Pastoral Anniversary celebrations
• Trustee Board Member (until her illness)

She leaves behind a host of loved ones who will cherish her memory, including her devoted nieces Robyn Williams, Cynthia Garnett, Freida Stevens, and Rochelle “Kay” Lane, along with many other nieces, nephews, cousins, several Godchildren, one being Janea Hill, and lifelong friends. Special acknowledgement is given to her dear friends Easter Parks, Roy Agee, Foster Pittman, and a bonus niece, Joy Pittman.

Geri was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Valerie Herring, and her Godson, Gregory Williams. Geri was the last surviving sibling among ten children: Pearl Brewington, Carl Herring, Robert Herring Sr., Lonnie Herring, Alphonzo Herring, Mable Horton, Fannie Dudley, Ernestine Herring, and Edward Herring.

Geri’s vibrant spirit, steadfast faith, and unwavering generosity touched the lives of many. She will always be remembered for her impeccable style, quick wit, and feisty personality. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. We find comfort in knowing this is not goodbye, but a heartfelt “see you again.”

A special THANK YOU to all the nurses and aides who assisted with Aunt Geri at The Avalon, Sapphire, and Kaplan Hospice Residence House. We appreciate all your care, support, and consideration shown her.
