DESCRIPTION:Hurley Council\, Jr. (90) peacefully transitioned from this earthly home to his eternal home on Sunday\, April 6\, 2025\, at Sapphire Nursing at Meadow Hill in Newburgh\, New York. \nBorn on July 4\, 1934\, in Cumberland County\, North Carolina\, Hurley was the eldest of six children born to the late Hurley Council Sr. and Laura Key. At an early age\, he moved to Newburgh\, New York\, where he built a life centered around faith\, family\, and service. \nOn June 24\, 1962\, Hurley married the love of his life\, Viola Buxton Council. He was a devoted husband\, father\, grandpa\, great-grandpa\, brother\, uncle\, and friend. \nFor more than 50 years\, Hurley was a dedicated and faithful member of the Mount Carmel Church of Christ\, Disciples of Christ in Newburgh\, New York\, where the pastor is Elder Dr. Thermond E. Herring. He served diligently as a member of the Usher Board Ministry and Nurses’ Ministry and was an active participant in Sunday School and Bible Study. His service extended beyond the church walls\, as he was always ready and willing to assist Bishop Emeritus George W. Johnson and Mother Emma Johnson\, driving them wherever they needed to go. \nProfessionally\, Hurley worked for Ford Motor Company in Mahwah\, NJ\, and Yellow Freight Trucking Company in Maybrook\, NY\, before retiring. He was a proud Mason of The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge NY\, 3rd District\, Hebron Lodge No. 48. \nHurley’s infectious smile had a way of lighting up every room he entered. His humor was just as unforgettable\, often responding to the question\, “How are you?” with “I’m still above ground” or “I’m getting old.” When asked about his wife\, he would always say\, “She’s my friend\, my wife\, and my mom.” \nHurley enjoyed singing two of his favorite songs: “People Get Ready” by The Impressions (“People get ready\, there’s a train a comin’\, don’t need no baggage\, just get on board”) and “Nobody Greater” by VaShawn Mitchell (“Nobody greater\, nobody greater than You”). \nLeft to cherish his memories: Hurley is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years\, Viola Buxton Council of Newburgh\, NY; his two sons\, Steven Council of Newburgh\, NY\, and Sherrell (Angela) Council of Raleigh\, NC; two grandsons\, Jerrell (Anastasia) Council of Creedmoor\, NC\, and Isaiah Council of Raleigh\, NC; two great-granddaughters\, Zoe Council and soon-to-arrive Naomi Council; one sister\, Bertha Council of Hope Mills\, NC; and one brother\, Lenwood (Ada) Council of Jacksonville\, NC. He also leaves behind his in-laws: Milton (Montez) Buxton of Newburgh\, NY\, Geraldine Chavis of Maybrook\, NY\, and Geneva Buxton of Connecticut. Special Tributes: Hurley also leaves behind a host of beloved nieces\, nephews\, cousins\, special friends\, and cherished family members including: Cousins: Velmer Buxton\, Robert Burns\, Johnnie and Gwen Buxton\, Rosco and Rutell Williams\, and Elmer (Bernadette) Buxton (predeceased)\, Friends: Ed Rich\, Zitri McFarland\, George Monroe\, Adam and Alma Bowman\, Deacon Billie Ray Brunson\, William and Dorothy Fields\, and Charles “Bud” Best (predeceased)\, Adopted Children: Jessie McCallop\, Mollie Allen\, Deacon Bernard\, and Nancy Maise\, Special Niece & Nephews: Keisha\, Junie\, and Tony\, Godchildren: Ernest “Fuzzy” Caldwell (predeceased) and Tony Mitchell\, Adored Special People: Courtney and Justin Moore. \nHe was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: James (Hattie) Council\, George Council\, Lonnie (Mary) Council\, brothers-in-law\, William “Pap” (Eleanor) Buxton and James Buxton\, and mother-in-law\, Myrtle Buxton.

DESCRIPTION:Reater Elese James Warren was born on February 13\, 1954\, in Rose Hill\, North Carolina. She passed away peacefully on Friday\, April 4\, 2025\, surrounded by her family at ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville\, North Carolina. \nShe was preceded in death by her father\, Walter Lee West James Sr.; her mother\, Thelma Adell Brown West James; her brother\, Lendell Davis James; and her sister\, Darlene Yvette James Webster. She is survived by her brother\, Walter L. James Jr.; her sister\, Arnetta Delois James Herring; and her sister\, M.A.Rayshelia James. \nHer children include DaMori Belanger\, Marshelia DaRea McNair\, Matthew ReElle Walker (Kimberly Jessenia)\, and Mark ReVelle Walker. She cherished her four grandchildren: Elise Lisette Holmes (Belanger)\, Amaury Mason Brockington (Marshelia)\, Luke Mateo Walker (Matthew)\, and Melanie Lucia Walker (Matthew). Additionally\, Reater was blessed to have many nieces\, nephews\, extended family members\, and friends. \nReater was a kind-hearted lady. Gentle\, soft-spoken\, and selfless. She loved working in her yard and was skilled in various trades. She regularly attended Habitat for Humanity workshops and trade classes at James Sprunt Community College. She was also a frequent blood donor for the American Red Cross. Reater extended her love and care to everyone around her and had a passion for music and the outdoors. She enjoyed activities such as playing her dulcimer along with other musical instruments. Other hobbies included gardening\, lawn care\, canoeing\, golfing\, arts and crafts\, shooting\, kayaking\, skiing\, and snorkeling. Additionally\, she loved raising pet chickens and collecting elephant art. \nReater was an incredibly hard worker and exhibited great toughness. She practiced self-reliance and was always willing to help others\, never seeking recognition for her efforts. Humble and vibrant\, she possessed strong character\, great wisdom\, numerous skills\, and loving compassion. Reater devoted her life to serving her family\, church\, and community. Generous in spirit\, she offered a helping hand\, a listening ear\, and encouraging words. She gave humbly to those in need. \nReater earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Fayetteville State University and did graduate studies at Iowa State University. She served as an elementary school educator at Laurinburg Elementary\, Maple Hill Elementary\, Rose Hill-Magnolia Elementary\, Wallace Elementary\, and Charity Middle School. Additionally\, she was employed continuously in education for over 48 years in various roles\, including primary bus driver\, substitute bus driver\, activity bus driver\, substitute teacher\, summer school teacher\, tutor\, and school volunteer. \nReater was a long-time member of Adoram Baptist Church of Wallace\, where she held several positions\, including Sunday school teacher\, church bus driver\, treasurer\, youth ministry leader\, youth and senior choir member\, and Vacation Bible School Principal. She also tutored in the after-school tutorial program at Adoram. As President of High TechMinds Multimedia\, she created a successful business in training\, media production\, and event space\, mentoring many small businesses. She authored “Run It Girl” to empower women in business. \nHer entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to community were further exemplified by her involvement with Organizing for Action (OFA)\, an organization founded by former President Barack Obama. She served as the former Chapter Lead Director of Prince George’s County OFA and later as the MD/DC State Digital Lead\, showcasing her dedication to civic engagement. \nEducation was vital to Carolyn. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Strayer University\, a Master’s from the University of Maryland\, University College\, and a Doctorate from Breakthrough Bible College. Her Intellectual Property\, Digitization\, and Digital Media certificate reflects her commitment to technological advancement. \nCarolyn was a loving mother to John C. Johnson\, Jr.\, Christian Johnson (Kimberly McKay Johnson)\, Jermain Johnson\, and a proud grandmother to Jayln Johnson\, Daniel McKay\, Halle McKay\, and Chace Johnson. She is survived by siblings Velma Newkirk Fennell (Leedell)\, Annie Newkirk West (Curtis)\, Evelyn Newkirk Ellis\, Ethel Newkirk Jacobs (Melvin)\, Major Newkirk\, Jr. (Mary)\, Arnold Newkirk (Patricia)\, and Ronald Newkirk (Joan)\, along with many nieces\, nephews\, other relatives\, and friends. \nHer legacy of hard work\, determination\, and dedication to empowering others will be remembered by all who knew her.
